Next week’s Auburn Community Orchestra concert kind of snuck up on me. Usually I like to have a little time to prep for an interview, but when Bill Schaffer in the Auburn University Department of Music reminded me the concert was coming and suggested I talk to conductor and faculty member Howard Goldstein, I was pretty much ready to drop by his office on the spot.
I’ve been on the radio with Howard before and he’s always an engaging and entertaining speaker, especially when it comes to classical music. This makes the upcoming concert all the more interesting for causal fans and aficionados alike because the evening of the concert, Jimmy’s in Opelika hosts a benefit for the Orchestra featuring music from the Auburn String Quartet and Howard offering some post-dinner insight into the evening’s program, which features works from Schubert, Dvorak, and a 20th Century concerto for trombone featuring Auburn University Department of Music faulty member Matt Wood.
The Auburn Community Orchestra performs at the First Baptist Church Opelika on Tuesday, March 9th at 7:30 p.m. A dinner benefit at Jimmy’s will precede the concert. Complete details are in the calendar listings.
